Ira Ono's Japanese Paste Paper Workshop - Hui No'eau on MAUI ISLAND - OCTOBER 5-6/Sat&Sun 9:30am-4pm

IRA ONO, a longtime Maui resident, is a multi-faceted visual artist and designer well known in Hawaii for his fresh and innovative work that engages the viewer with a wide range of media and subject matter. His works are featured in the Hawaii State Art Museum and private collections in the U.S., Europe, and Japan.

Additionally, he is the founder of the annual Trash Art Shows on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Ira Ono started the first fine crafts gallery on Maui in Pa‘ia called Touchstone Gallery in 1974 which is now the Maui Crafts Guild. On Maui, he started the Hui No‘eau ceramics department when it was located at the Kahului Fairgrounds for 5 years before moving to Kaluanui in Makawao.

Ira Ono is also the owner and director of Volcano Garden Arts gallery in Volcano, Hawaii where he exhibits his personal works along with over 100 local artists from across the state.

This two-day workshop will cover all aspects of paste-paper techniques, and all paper, pigments, and supplies will be provided. The finished paper becomes a valuable source of material for original paintings, bookmaking, collage, greeting cards, wallpaper, and furniture.

Japanese paste paper is a surface design technique originating in England over 100 years ago. Using common household ingredients and water-based pigments, a paste is formed and placed on paper, and then combed to give lush, three-dimensional effects. Ira has created a breakthrough in this medium by using various mixed media such as personal photos, love letters, stamps, and vintage photography by incorporating these elements into the collages and original painting. Japanese paste paper is an ancient technique, but by combining it with collage, I have created a new and unique art form that is simple to learn. Artistic skills are not required, and any mistakes made are easily looked upon as interesting aesthetic alternatives.
